5 Common Football Injuries
Do you have a kid that joined the football team this year? There are few sports that build the team mentality better than football. It is not just a sport – it is a way for young people to learn how to be a working part of a team, to understand how it feels to rely on others and have others rely on them. But it is also a physically tough game that can bruise and batter players. Even with the possibility of injury, the risk is often worth the rewards. However, here are five of the most common football injury areas to be prepared for if your kid is hurt on the field.
- The twisted or sprained ankle is one of the most common injuries that happens to football players, regardless of position.
- Head and neck injuries. Although helmets do protect the head, it is still common for a hard hit to result in a concussion or neck injury. There has been increased focus on protecting this area to reduce the chance of serious injury.
- Knee and leg. Pulled muscles, tendons and ligaments in the knees and legs are one of big show stoppers in football.
- Many hits are done to and with the shoulder, resulting in broken calvicle bones, torn rotator cuffs and shoulder dislocation/separation.
- Back and spine. A hard hit on the football field can result in injuries that are often similar to car accidents – whiplash, herniated discs and muscle strain.
If you child does get hurt on the field, make sure he or she gets specialized treatment for their injuries. Find a sports medicine specialist that has the knowledge and experience to oversee the treatment and recovery for these injuries.
