Are You Expecting Twins?
Finding out you are pregnant is exciting- finding out your having twins is both exhilarating and frightening. Bringing one child into the world is amazing, and at times, stressful enough; bringing two or more can be a little scary. However, with the right OBGYN team on your side, you can have a healthy pregnancy and be ready to bring those babies into the world.
Special Needs for Multiple Pregnancy
Any pregnancy has risks, but twin and multiple pregnancies are considered higher risk. This does not mean that you need to be afraid or overly concerned about the welfare of your babies. It just means you need to take some precautions and have extra monitoring to ensure that both your babies are healthy and happy in your tummy. Some of the recommendations for women pregnant with twins include:
- Take more folic acid. All pregnant women should be taking folic acid during their pregnancy to help ward off certain birth defects. With twins, the amount is more than double, usually around one milligram per day.
- Nutrition is important. Not only are you feeding an extra human, you are feeding two. Eating a balanced, healthy diet is dually important when you are pregnant with twins.
- Wear comfortable clothes and shoes. With twins, you are likely to gain 10-15 pounds more than a single birth. That can be an extra 40-50 pounds to carry on your frame. Make sure you have the right shoes and clothing to keep you comfortable.
Most importantly, you will need an OB GYN team that specializes in twin pregnancies to monitor you and your babies’ health. Expect to have more doctor visits than a single pregnancy to ensure that everything is on track to deliver two healthy new humans into your family.
