What is Achilles Tendonitis?
A very common injury that active people suffer from is achilles tendonitis. The achilles tendon is a very important ligament that attaches the calf muscle to the bones of the heel. It is a very important tendon that is used for jumping, running, and walking. While this tendon is very strong, it isn’t very flexible and can tear or become inflamed. Tendonitis refers to the inflammation of the achilles area. Some symptoms include swelling around the heel, discomfort when walking, and tight calf muscles. The discomfort can range anywhere from slight pain to severe aching in the heel.
People who suffer from flat feet or have legs that are slightly different lengths may experience tendonitis. Some other causes may be poor running form or training during cold weather. It has also been found that people with bone spurs may also develop achilles tendonitis.
If you start feeling mild discomfort around the heel, it is recommended that you reduce your activity to allow the tendon to relax. Icing the area and wrapping it for support also helps. If the pain persists, it will be necessary to see a doctor. They may be able to prescribe medication or physical therapy to help manage pain and inflammation and return range of motion to the foot. Testing may need to be done to see if the tendon has been ruptured or torn. In some cases, surgery may be required to repair the tendon.
Don’t suffer with heel pain. If you feel discomfort after activity and simple self care cannot stop the pain, see your doctor to find out if you have achilles tendonitis.
