Can My Birthmark Be Removed?
Do you have a birthmark that is embarrassing or disfiguring to your appearance? Many people are born with birthmarks somewhere on their body. While some are easily covered with clothing, those with birthmarks on their face or other exposed areas can be self-conscious and wonder whether they can have the mark removed. There are different types of birthmarks, but in most cases, they can be removed or faded using cosmetic surgery procedures.
Types of Birthmarks
Not all birthmarks are the same, nor is the treatment for removal the same for all types. There are two main types of birthmarks, vascular and pigmentary. Vascular birthmarks are red or pink, as is the case with port wine stains. These are often the type that people want removed since they are more noticeable and can occur on the face or neck. Pigmentary are usually tan or brown, often less distracting than vascular. Both types can be in a variety of shapes and sizes on many different areas of the body.
Treatment for birthmark removal is usually laser therapy. The type of laser used depends on the birthmark being treated. Different laser frequencies can be used on the darker vascular birthmarks to help them fade, usually over several months of treatments. In some cases, laser therapy can completely remove the birthmark. However, some of the darker pigmented marks may not be able to be made completely invisible, but can be faded considerably, making them less noticeable.
If you have a birthmark you want removed, consult an experienced plastic surgeon for procedure options. In most cases, there are cosmetic procedures that can eliminate or reduce the prominence of your birthmark to improve your appearance.
